How long does local SEO take to work for a dental practice?

Most dental practices in medium-competition markets see measurable Map Pack movement within 90 to 120 days of consistent optimisation. Reaching a top-three position typically takes 4 to 8 months in medium markets and 8 to 14 months in major metros. Dental is a YMYL category, which means Google applies additional scrutiny to authority signals. A systematic approach to healthcare directory listings, review generation, and website content depth produces the most consistent results over this timeline.

Which GBP categories should a dental practice use?

The primary GBP category for most practices is Dentist. Secondary categories should reflect your actual specialties. Cosmetic Dentist, Pediatric Dentist, and Emergency Dental Service are the most common secondary categories. Orthodontist is worth adding if you offer orthodontic treatment. Only add categories for services you actually provide. Misrepresenting services in GBP categories can result in negative reviews from patients who expected a service you do not offer.

What insurance information should appear in a dental practice GBP?

Your accepted insurance networks should be listed in GBP attributes under the Health Insurance section. This is one of the highest-conversion attributes in the dental GBP because many patients begin their search by filtering for practices that accept their specific insurance. If you accept a wide range of insurances, list the most common networks individually rather than just writing "accepts most major insurances." Patients searching for their specific plan by name will find you more easily with specific plan names in your profile.

How do reviews affect dental patient acquisition specifically?

Reviews affect dental patient acquisition at two stages. First, they affect which Map Pack position you occupy, since review count and recency are ranking signals. Second, they affect whether a patient who sees your listing decides to call, since review content is the primary trust signal for health providers. Reviews mentioning anxiety management, specific procedures, and specific positive outcomes have the highest conversion impact. Ask patients to mention the specific procedure and their experience in their review, not just to leave a star rating.

What healthcare directories should a dental practice be listed on?

The most important healthcare-specific directories for dental practices are Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Vitals, WebMD, and the American Dental Association provider directory. Each of these carries high domain authority and provides citation signals that are weighted specifically for health-category local searches. General directories like Yelp, Facebook, and Google are also important, but the healthcare-specific directories carry additional YMYL authority that general directories cannot replicate.

How does dental local SEO differ from general dentist paid advertising?

Dental paid advertising (Google Ads, Meta Ads) produces immediate visibility but requires ongoing spend to maintain results. When the ad spend stops, the visibility stops. Local SEO builds organic Map Pack and organic search presence that continues to produce patient calls without ongoing per-click costs. The two channels work best in combination: paid advertising provides immediate patient flow while local SEO builds the long-term organic presence. Once local SEO produces consistent top-three Map Pack positions, the cost per acquired patient drops significantly compared to paid advertising alone.
