Campaign Starting Q1 2021
Introduction
This case study outlines how we helped Exclusive Dispensary, Michigan's first licensed cannabis dispensary, reach 103,029 new customers and generate $4.13 million in organic revenue through a structured $24,000 SEO investment.
Operating across multiple locations and serving a growing statewide customer base, Exclusive had built its reputation on a curated product range, accessible pricing, and a consumer experience designed to welcome both new and experienced cannabis buyers. When the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift toward online ordering and digital discovery across the cannabis category, Exclusive recognised a significant gap between the organic search traffic they were generating and the volume they should have been capturing given their brand authority and market position.
They partnered with Howling Media in Q1 of 2021 to close that gap through a structured, data-led SEO campaign targeting organic traffic growth and statewide market reach.
The Brief
Despite being a category pioneer with strong brand recognition among existing customers, Exclusive was not capturing the volume of organic search traffic that their market position warranted. COVID-19 had dramatically increased online cannabis search volume across Michigan, and competing dispensaries were investing heavily in digital channels to capture this demand. The site had structural and technical issues limiting its ability to rank competitively for the high-intent commercial queries that drive online orders.
Key Challenges Identified
- Organic search traffic significantly below what their market position and brand authority should have been generating
- Metadata inconsistent or absent across key commercial and category pages, suppressing click-through rates from search results
- Heading structures misaligned with the search intent of priority target queries across product and category pages
- Off-site authority signals insufficient for Michigan's competitive legalised cannabis search landscape
- Google Business Profile signals across locations not fully optimised, limiting Map Pack visibility for high-converting local searches
- Competing dispensaries actively investing in digital acquisition to capture COVID-accelerated growth in online cannabis search demand
The Strategy
Technical and On-Site Foundations
Following a comprehensive site audit identifying metadata gaps, heading structure issues, and content misalignment across key commercial pages, we systematically addressed each foundational issue. Metadata was rewritten across all commercial and category pages to improve click-through rates from search results. Heading hierarchies were corrected to align page content with the search intent of high-value target queries. Page entity signals were strengthened across product and category pages, ensuring search engines could more accurately interpret the site's relevance for the dispensary and cannabis product queries driving the highest commercial intent traffic in this category.
Off-Site Authority Building
A targeted link building programme was executed, focusing on acquiring authority from cannabis industry publications, health and wellness directories, and Michigan local business sources. Directory submissions were completed across Michigan-specific local business directories to strengthen geographic authority signals relevant to the state's competitive cannabis search landscape. Google Business Profile optimisation was applied across all Exclusive dispensary locations, with category alignment, content improvements, and consistent NAP data confirmed across all external directory listings. These improvements directly strengthened local Map Pack eligibility for the location-based searches that represent the highest-converting query type for a multi-location dispensary operation.
Organic Revenue Optimisation
Commercial page structure across the site was realigned with transactional search intent, ensuring pages targeting purchase-ready queries were structured to facilitate rather than obstruct the ordering decision. Online ordering entry points were assessed and optimised against the landing patterns of organic search visitors, reducing friction between discovery and completed transaction. Category and product page content was updated to capture the high-intent cannabis purchase queries most likely to drive online orders in the Michigan market. The approach addressed the full customer journey from initial organic discovery through to completed transaction, building a search acquisition funnel capable of generating consistent revenue without the per-click cost of paid advertising.
The Results
The campaign produced results that significantly exceeded the targets set at the outset of the engagement.
Organic search became the dominant customer acquisition channel for Exclusive over the campaign period. The site reached 103,029 new users through organic search, with 87,454 total users attributable to organic traffic during the measurement window. This represented a step-change in Exclusive's ability to reach new customers across Michigan without relying on paid advertising spend.
The commercial impact of this traffic growth was substantial. Organic search drove 29,849 transactions generating $4.13 million in revenue. Against a total campaign investment of $24,000, this produced a return on advertising spend of $172.08 for every dollar invested, one of the strongest efficiency ratios achievable through any digital marketing channel.
The results validated the core strategic hypothesis: that a dispensary with genuine brand authority and a strong product offering, but with unresolved technical and structural SEO gaps, could generate outsized returns from a focused and well-executed SEO investment.
Addressing the foundational issues suppressing organic visibility unlocked a level of organic traffic and revenue that paid advertising could not have matched at equivalent cost.
These results confirmed that resolving foundational technical and structural SEO gaps can unlock the full organic potential of businesses that already possess strong brand authority, market position, and a quality product offering.
